Yes, you can do this. It is not a problem. Here is what you do:
Connect your Duo & LC together via the SCSI ports. DO NOT TURN THE DUO ON YET.
Turn on the LC. Press "Command (Apple)" + "Power" keys together. You will see a
white box come up on the screen. DO NOT TOUCH ANOTHER KEY ON YOUR LC KEYBOARD
(in fact, I would unplug your LC keyboard at this point as a precaution)!
Next, power-up your Duo. It should find the LC as a hard disk and place it on
the desktop. If it does not, then it is because your LC & Duo HDD's have the
same SCSI ID, probably "0". This is harder to change on an LC or other SCSI
desktop than a Duo where you have a control panel to select the SCSI ID No. as
you will have to open your LC and physically change the SCSI ID of your HDD by
moving jumpers. Change the LC HDD to any unused SCSI ID. When you start your LC
up normally, it will find the HDD to startup from, although it will take longer
as it will look to ID 0 first. If you have the Startup Disk control panel you
can select the HD there and help speed up the process.
That's all there is to it. When you're done, turn off your Duo first, then turn
the power off to the LC (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE BY USING THE DIAGNOSTIC BOX
COMMANDS).
I've used this method safely with my 6500 & even another Duo in a dock for
years (although you try this at your own risk and I have no liability
whatsoever if something goes wrong). FYI, I never had the HDD conflict problem
as my 6500 had an internal IDE drive, on which this method will not work. It
will only access SCSI drives on which my 6500 were all external. Same for my
Duo Dock and as the internal HDD is usually ID 1 on a dock.
Good luck!
