Dear DP,

I suppose it depends on your standards of what is slow and fast, but 8.6
on my PB 2400 with the same RAM is, by my standards fast. It's not what I
would call blistering, I mean, I'm not sitting here with a face distorted
with G forces, but it's certainly not slow.

One thought is that you may have it with the default settings. If you
haven't taken out what you don't need with Extensions Manager, you will
have a whole load of fat in your system folder. There are many other
tricks to speed things up. Pogue's MacSecrets has some great data about
this and the extensions and control panels in your system folder. Plus
it's a very well written and entertaining book. If you are new to the
Mac, I would highly recommend it.

Another thought is that you might be trying to do heavy graphics work or
play DVD's on it or something.

>From what I hear, MacOS 9 is not a lot different on it than 8.6, friends
tell me it's no faster or slower. For this reason I haven't upgraded.

And finally, if you go to VersionTracker, you can download Newer's free
GuagePro. This will let you know whether everything on your computer is
working correctly or not - RAM, CPU and so on.

I'm assuming that you are fairly new to the Mac, or to computers. If this
is not the case, I apologize for stating the obvious.

Yours sincerely,

John Davis
