Thanks! This means, of course, that someone with sufficient
knowledge can construct a battery with a soldering iron and some
heat-shrink tubing, at least in theory. And, if the design was done
by IBM, as the stickers inside the machine suggest :-) then it's well
worth checking with a PC laptop repair specialist.

I would make a call to Apple customer service and complain, since
they should have done it when you asked them to--after all, you know
that it was failing better than they do. I would have considered
crimping the cables wrongly, thus causing it to fail (but if they
could tell you opened your case, the warranty would probably have
been void, of course.
Anyone wants to call Apple about this, my case number is 6830506. :-)
