Did you try a disk repair program?

I have a Zip drive with a miniimal system folder and techTool, DiskSetup (or whatever
is the Apple diskk tool's name is nowadays), DiskWarrior and other such goodies. If
you have a Zip drive, make such a disk, boot up from it and then doctor your HD until
it revives. Hope it helps.
