Right. My point is that the Apple CDEV should work. You should still update your
drivers & CDEV's etc. to Apple's latest versions (they are all available via
Apple's software site), even if you don't update beyond OS 8.1.  I still don't
understand how your 2300 & 280c share the same startup file, since each machine
requires separate resources. I think this may be part of your problem as well.

I assume you have zapped your PRAM, rebuilt your desktop and even reset your
Power Manager. If I remember correctly, I had to do this at one point to get my
2300 recognizing and starting up from the internal drive.
