#2 -- OS 9 will take from 15 to 25 Mb RAM, depending on your needs.  I'm 
a hard user with a lot of tools/toys on my machine and I sit right at 24 
Mb.  I've found 9.0.4 more stable than 8.6, too...  just watch the other 
required upgrades (ATM, etc.)

#3 -- a cheap solution is to use ResEdit to make files invisible 
temporarily, but one has to be careful.  A program like nightwatch would 
be better, or the powerbook security cdev (control panel) is probably 
what you want.
