>As for the 2400/duo/accessories debate: c'mon, guys. Both the 2400
>and the duo were (repeat: were) great machines in their time, (and
>while you could use ethernet and a modem at the same time,) but the
>whole debate about "you'll have to carry around a bunch of crap" is
>dead. Toshiba and Sony, among others, make tiny little 3lbs. machines
>that have anything you need, from ethernet to video...

But they are missing the most key ingredient: Mac OS

I have a newish Toshiba portable in addition to my PM 2400 and 190. I
lent the Tosh out and when it was returned the Ethernet PC card would no
longer work. After messing with it for hours, I gave it to our "PC
expert" and he messed with it for hours. We ended up sending it out to
get fixed. Verdict: the interrupt on The PC card slot had been changed!
Imagine that! Can you believe that Toshiba couldn't dedicate an interrupt
to a slot that their factory built into this machine! This is a problem
you will never encountered with any MacOS machine no matter how hoary.

The software/hardware integration of Wintel machines is incredibly poor.
I am reminded of this when I watch a Wintel boot and the screen goes from
text to 640x480, sometimes back to text, and then to the final
resolution. How long has Windows been around?

>Once I worked in an office where I got friendly with the IS guy. One day
>he saw my nice laptop and said "Hey, an Apple!" I said I did not think he
>bothered with Macs, being such a serious PC guy who knew the ins and outs
>of Wintel machines.
>
>"Me?" he said, "I thank God every day for PC's, without these crappy
>machines I would not have a job. But at home I use only Macs. I have one,
>my wife has one, both of my kids have one. I would not let them use
>anything else."

I use this same technique to an advantage. I am known as a guy that knows
computers. People are always asking be if I can help them with their
computers. I tell them I don't do Windows. This gets rid of 80% of the
requests and those final 20% are usually a cinch.

Lessee... when was the last time I had to reinstall the OS or an
application?

Long live the 2400! And I hope we see a successor to the crown soon.
