I realize this is off topic, but what kind of experience have you had with
the AppleCare's Protection Plan? Is it worth the extra $300? The only
substantive benefit seems to be the two year extension on the parts and
labor. Any feedback would be helpful. This is what Apple's web site says
about it:
At a glance
Now get three years of service and support for your iMac, iBook, Power Mac
(and Apple display), or PowerBook computer at one economical price. No other
service and support program gives you such peace of mind about your Apple
system. The plan includes direct telephone access, powerful diagnostic
tools, Apple-certified repairs, and simplified access to Apple's
24-hour-a-day Internet support.
Key Features
24-hour-a-day Internet support
The AppleCare Protection Plan provides a special web site that gives you
easy access to loads of great information to keep your Macintosh system
working smoothly.
Powerful diagnostic tools
Keep your Macintosh running smoothly with the enclosed CD of powerful
diagnostic software, TechTool Deluxe from Micromat. These tools test the
major components of your Apple system, including hard drives, processors and
chips, RAM, and more. They also check your software and can help you
diagnose and fix many software conflicts yourself.
Direct telephone access to Apple experts
The AppleCare Protection Plan gives you direct access to the people who know
your Macintosh system best. Theyll walk you through most of the hardware and
operating system difficulties you may encounter. The plan covers telephone
support for three years from the date you purchased your Apple system
(extended from the 90 days included with your equipment purchase).
Apple-certified repairs
When repairs are needed, only the AppleCare Protection Plan ensures that
theyll be performed by certified Apple technicians using genuine Apple
parts. The plan covers both parts and labor for three years after the
purchase of your Apple system (two years beyond the limited warranty).
