Thanks for your suggestions.

I know the unique sound of the HD (in the 2300, not the dock). The fan
doesn't block its sound if you get your ear close to it. I can "spin
down" the HD using the control strip but it starts back up shortly after
that. I was thinking that it might be ethernet port activity that
restarts it. Anyhow, I was just wondering if there's such a thing a
wearing a HD out by letting it run al the time. I'm pretty well backed
up but I'd prefer not to have to go thru the trauma of a HD failure.

This Dock has an ethernet port but not a HD. I wouldn't mind sleeping it
(and thus the fan) if that's possible. Any info on the sleep utility?
