I use the Sony Portable CD PRD-650. I believe this is a 4x machine.
I checked today and found the 2400c would not boot when I held down
the "C" key on my *external* keyboard.
However, the 2400c *will* boot from the CD if I hold down the "C" key
on the 2400c built in keyboard.
Further, on the first bootup, I got a boot error and was advised to
hold down the shift key at startup.
I found the 2400c won't boot from the CD if the shift and "C" keys
are held down simultaneously.
(Make sure you have the Sony CD-ROM Extension installed as Jacqueline
Staples <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> suggested. I disable the Apple CD
Extension as well).
*This is the procedure which works for me.*
Starting with 2400c shutdown, Sony CD connected, powered up and CD in place.
Hold down "C" key, on built in keyboard and start 2400c.
You may see the "No Startup Drive" icon, but after a few moments, the
Sony will activate and you will see the Mac "smiling face".
As soon as that appears, release the "C" key and hold down the Shift
key to disable extensions on the CD.
The 2400c should boot happily from there.
Let me know if you need more.
Have a good day: Douglas Wagner
