Check your advanced power management functions in the Energy Saver CP.
That has an option to turn off power to inactive cards. If your card
gets hot when that option is chosen, it must be because (1) you haven't
really turned off AppleTalk and modem access, or (2) it picked up heat
from the CPU.
My experience is that my Farallon card runs quite cool, and so I
presume you've not found this conservation option or you still have
AppleTalk (EtherTalk) going. I use a special "Location" for my 2400 in
the air and get all the time I need for my Minneapolis/Oakland commute,
if I start with a fully-charged, relatively new, batt.
