I believe IBM had an incredibly high failure rate for the TravelStar
4G -- upwards of 30%. I had the good fortune to be one of the first
adopters, and our tape backup was also faulty... (btw, tape backup is
an oxymoron!), so...

The whine is a good sign of pre-death problems. DON'T IGNORE IT. I
tried to get by until a replacement drive came for my desktop; the
drive was back-ordered, "just two days," etc.; until my drive died a
sudden death, and sounded like a submarine diving into the water.
Thereafter followed two weeks of hell, and I still have an 8G
external that I bought to hold the files off tape... one day I'll go
over them...

I haven't heard anything about the 6G having a high failure rate. The
production runs were probably close enough, that they hadn't dealt
with the problem. I believe both were fabbed in Hungary, which is now
known as a very good plant (though, btw, the enviromentally and
worker-conscious might note that IBM moved this stuff out of San Jose
because it was too dirty).

On their side, when my drive did die, I called IBM, gave them the
serial number, and there was a drive on my doorstep the next day.

Hitachi I know nothing about. Toshiba also makes drives that fit the
specs (including power consumption), but their 4 & 6 gigs don't work
:), which may be a good indication that the rest won't either...
