first, thanks for the feedback on the 2400 li-ion battery prices. great
list.

next, i've observed an unusual issue in a 2400 that i know needs a pram
battery (loses date and time when all power is disconnected):

the powerbook will charge properly, and behave just like a reliable
computer. at some point, though, it stops seeing the power adapter, and
no longer charges the battery. it also will not run the computer if the
battery is out.

details
-------
- power adapter is known good and working, as are the two batteries i've
tested.

- resetting power manager (leave all power disconnected for a few hours,
then press the reset button on the back of the 'book) restores the
computer's ability to see the power adapter.

- upon first pressing the reset button after several hours disconnected
from all power, the computer sounds the startup chime, but doesn't boot.
pressing the power button on the keyboard then boots the computer
properly.

- all this is in a newly installed OS 8.6, with freshly formatted stock
hard drive. processor is stock as well.

questions
---------

1. does operating system software affect the power manager? i.e., does
a fresh system install change the operation of the power manager, or are
the pwr mgr functions on the motherboard?

2. anyone willing to guess whether this is resolvable without replacing
the motherboard?

3. does the pram battery affect the operation of the power manager?
other non-powerpc powerbooks i've worked on did not seem affected in this
manner.

4. last but not least, the motor to eject a pc card doesn't respond on
this book. i recall someone posting a link to their site (in japan, i
think) where they discussed how the motors gears had come "undone," as it
were. anyone still have the link?

thanks in advance for the feedback....
