Dear VAMP,
I spent so much time trying to do this a few months ago that I wrote
myself a report on it. The scope of this report may be a little
different than what you want to do, but read it to learn alot of tricks
you'll need to know about....in particular the fact that you must use
Toast 3.0 and not Toast 4.0....

A. Problem: In the event of a complete hard-drive failure requiring
reformatting, you lose your System Folder with all its preferences,
3rd-party extensions, your nice Apple menu and Control Strip which took
you so long to get it just how you want it, and other items installed by
your applications. How can you back this up using your CD Recorder, so
you won't have to reinstall your applications one-by-one and reset all
your preferences?
B. Solution:
Write a Bootable CD with a Bare Bones System Folder, also containing a
second System Folder which can be either (1) your Real System Folder or
(2) an Interim System Folder which has enough Extensions and Control
Panels to connect to your network (AppleTalk, File Sharing, Open
Transport, and Ethernet drivers for your network card). In fact, your
Interim System Folder may be a copy of your Real System Folder, but since
you're backing it up elsewhere on your network, you don't need to update
the Interim System Folder unless you change your network.
That is, if you have an Ethernet with another Mac and big hard drive
available, back up your Real System Folder to it whenever you make
significant improvements to it. Note: To copy your System Folder to
another Mac via AppleTalk, use the Finder on the computer whose System
Folder you are copying FROM, otherwise the copy will not be able to
complete due to Fonts and things being "in use". Depending on size, this
takes maybe an hour with LocalTalk, 10 minutes with 10BaseT ethernet, 1
minute with 100BaseT ethernet.
If you're not using this "network backup" method, you'll need to rewrite
your bootable CD whenever you make improvements to your Real System
Folder.
After the dreaded day when your hard drive dies, the steps are:
1. Reformat the drive using Apple's Disk Tools, TechTool Pro or Norton
Utilities, remembering to select HFS+ if you want it (desirable for
drives > 4 GB).
2. Use Norton or TechTool to fix bad blocks.
3. Boot from your CD. Remember that you must use a genuine Apple CD
drive, and hold down the C key after the startup chime. If your CD drive
is external, as with a Powerbook 2400, it's a little tricky to get it to
work. See below.
4. If your Real System Folder is on the CD, you simply copy it to your
hard drive, restart and you're done. If you've got the Interim System
Folder, skip to the next step.
5. Copy the Interim System Folder to the hard drive.
6. Shut down.
7. Disconnect the CD drive.
8. Restart.
9. Enable File sharing, choose the correct AppleTalk port, connect to
the computer which has the Real System Folder backup.
10. Copy the Real System Folder from the network
11. Change the blessing from the Interim System Folder to the the Real
System Folder (see below for specific instructions.)
12. Restart and you're back in business.
C. How To Make the Bare Bones System Folder:
To make the Bare Bones System Folder, copy your System Folder,
eliminating as much as possible. For OS 8.1, you need only the
following items:
Extensions (folder contains Appearance Extension and Text Encoding
Converter)
Finder
Fonts (suitcase, contains Charcoal, Chicago, Geneva, Monaco)
System
Text Encodings
Note: It would be useful if you could put enough extensions in here to at
least bring your network up, but it won't work. In particular, File
Sharing cannot be enabled when booting from a CD, and the Chooser will
not work either. That's why you need the Interim System Folder.
You should test your Bare Bones System Folder by blessing it, restarting
your computer, verifying that it works, then re-blessing the Real System
Folder.
D. To "Bless" a Different System Folder
The Macintosh OS maintains one and only one "blessed" System Folder on a
hard disk or "volume". This is the System Folder which will load and
boot a Mac computer the next time it is restarted on this volume. At any
time, you can tell which one (if any) is blessed because it has the
Smiling Mac OS icon on it. To change the blessing from System Folder A
to System Folder B,
1. Un-bless System Folder A by putting its Finder or System file into a
subfolder.
2. Verify that the Smiling Mac OS icon is gone from your System Folder
A.
3. Bless System Folder B by opening and closing it.
4. Put the Finder or System back where you found it, loose in the System
Folder A.
5. Verify that System Folder B is now blessed.
This method works reliably with OS 8. With System 7, you sometimes might
have to move the System file and/or Finder file out to the root level of
the hard drive, then move it back into the desired blessed System Folder,
before the system recognizes and blesses it.
E. To write a Mac Bootable CD with Toast.
You must install and use Toast 3.8. Despite what the manual says, we
have not been able to make a Bootable CD using Toast 4.0.
1. Check Control Panels > File Sharing and turn off File Sharing if it
is on.
2. Launch Toast 3.8 . If you have a LaCie CDRW-12432S CD drive, you
must put this driver in the same folder with Toast 3.8.
3. Menu > Utilities > Create Temporary Partition.
4. Name it how you want the CD named, such as "Jack's System Restorer".
5. The volume will appear on the desktop as a CD. Copy your Bare Bones
System Folder to it.
6. Open the volume and verify that the Bare Bones System Folder is
"blessed" (smiling Mac).
7. Add the Real System Folder and/or Interim System Folder.
8. (optional) Add any other folders and files (applications, etc.) you
might need to restore "on the road".
9. Verify that your Bare Bones System Folder in the CD is still blessed.
10. Go back to Toast, Menu > Format > Mac Volume
11. Drag the CD you created onto the Toast window
12. Click Data
13. check Bootable.
14. check Don't Copy Free space
15. Click OK
16. Click Agree.
17. Click Write CD
18. Set speed to 8x
19. Insert blank CDR.
20. Click Write Disc.
21. When the disc is done, turn File Sharing back on, if you turned it
off.
F. To Start A Finicky Powerbook On An External CD-ROM Drive:
1. Put the CD in an Apple-brand external CD drive and close the drawer.
2. Turn off power on the CD drive and the shut down the powerbook.
3. Connect SCSI cable; make sure it's pushed in straight, all the way.
4. Turn on CD drive power.
5. Wait 12 seconds for drive to spin up.
6. Hold down power key of powerbook for 1 second, to start it.
7. Wait 2 seconds.
8. Hold down C key until you see smiling Mac.
