Are you sure you don't have the leads reversed?
If you connect the positive lead to the negative contact on the battery,
and
the negative lead to the positive contact... it will read as a negative
voltage...

To which misterh replied,

I tried it both ways and switched the leads. I tried every possible
combination of contacts on the battery and settings on the volt/ohm
meter. It always tried to jump the needle in a negative direction-
sometimes harder than others.

Obviously I'm no electronics expert, I just play one on T.V.

Anybody got the solution?
