The SoftPivot driver isn't the only option. The PrecisionColor Pivot also
works with Portrait's MacPortrait driver, which requires a little Portrait
adaptor plug that replaces the Pivot's cable adaptor. Since the SoftPivot
driver only works with systems up to 7.1, this is the only way to use the
Pivot with later systems (though it's also fine, indeed better, with 7.1).
What I confess I don't know is whether the Portrait adaptor & driver will
work with the Dock II - my dock lives at work and my Pivot at home with a
minidock, so the twain have never met. But the MacPortrait driver is much
more stable than the SoftPivot one - there were conflicts between the
SoftPivot driver and, if I remember right, Open Transport - and the solid
adaptor is more robust than the Pivot's own cable one, so it's worth
thinking about anyway. Pricey, though; I think the adaptor + software were
$149 when I took the plunge a few years back, and that's always assuming
they still do them. (Radius reabsorbed Portrait, originally a spun-off
company.) But I never regretted it: the Pivot is a truly wonderful monitor,
and if you can get it working you'll be thrilled with it. The extinction of
portrait monitors is one of the great mysteries of our time; I've never
understood why all modern monitors are landscape-oriented, when for almost
anything you actually do on a computer vertical screen space is so much
more important.
