I've been fiddling with a opened up Type I and it seems that if one is
handy with a dremel tool and can get copper spring contacts, it is
possible to turn it into a battery holder for 10 AA NiMH cells (the
exact same cells which make up the Type I packs).  This means that you
can just keep on changing individual battery cells as they go bad until
...oh, Apple takes over Microsoft.

I think it charges the batteries and the one in the Duo IN SEQUENCE, not
simultaneously.  There are indicator lights on the charger and a menu
bar item on the duo to show which is charging at any one time.
