Side note; is RMS still the Emacs maintainer? I haven't kept up with
emacs-devel, but he was supposed to be stepping down.

The initial purpose of that branch was to use a structured
`dvc-fileinfo' type for the diff ewocs. That part is mostly working,
but only for the xmtn back-end; all the other back-ends need work. I
did start on the bzr back-end; I'll start a separate thread on that
soon.

I've also made several other experimental changes in that branch that
I have not even brought up here.

I'm planning to split out just the dvc-fileinfo part, so it can be
merged with main. I think I figured out a way to allow both the old
structure and the new to coexist in separate back-ends, so the
transition can be more gradual.
