Don't remember the details, and "bzr annotate" gives revision 1 for
this instance of file-truename (and I'm too lazy to dig the tla
archive).

One reason we want something unique, IIRC, is to make sure we don't
create multiple *dvc-status* (or others) buffers for the same
repository. That call to file-truename is useful in cases like

/home/foo/symlink/repo/dir

but harmfull (as you noticed) for

/home/foo/repo/symlink/dir

I guess you can try removing this file-truename, replace the other
with dvc-uniquify-file-name, check that my first case above doesn't
break it, and not bother too much with tla support (I don't think DVC
really has tla users anymore ...).
