This is a very nice idea, and something like it has been requested in LJ Support requests before; the ability to 'attach' an OpenID account to your existing username. I would absolutely love it if this was possible, especially when you combine it with the comment importing idea - it'll be much easier to do things if this was possible. As far as I can tell, the infrastructure is already there in the "Work as user" dropdown and the mark in the database that says "this account can control this community" - just extend that to OpenID users too.
