Hey all,

I was wondering something and wanted to ask if I'm the only one interested in
this and if it's something that's even possible or to be considered:

What about a directory for the communities on DW?
I have a very blurry memory that something like this existed in the beginning
of LJ, but wasn't very well maintained and was gone after a while.

What I imagine:
Maintainers can add their communities to the directory by hand if they wish to.
There is an option upon creation of a community to add it to the directory (but
you can later add or remove it as well). They may also add a short description.
Adult communities would be marked as such or would not display in the first
place for underage users. It should only be possible to add a community to one
category. Maybe an activity and size status could be displayed as well. It
should be possible for anyone to report comms which are in the wrong category.

Why would I want that?
Well, it's simple. I love to browse such directories and look for communities
to join. I find it was more convenient, than to come up with possible search
terms for possible interests. Also, browsing such directories I might easily
find communities which I find appealing, but didn't think of in the first
place. On LJ, some topics have numerous communities, most of which are dead. I
would have the hope that a directory would help people decide if they really
need to create another community about topic XY (maybe with a link on the
community creation page saying something like 'Have you checked the directory
for communities of that topic already?).

I am sure there are a million reasons to be against something like that
directory and I have no idea how easily it could be implemented and maintained
(volunteers!). But I thought I'd throw it in at that early stage, as it is
always easier to implement something in the beginning than later, when there
are already a million communities.

This could also be very interesting for feeds, as there is no really nice way
to search for feeds right now (unless I search for a specific feed or try to
make a new one which already exists).

And yes, I totally understand if this is something nobody but me cares about ;)
And thats it's not something essential ... anyway, I miss(ed) it on LJ.

Have a nice day,
elfy
