The logo, the swirl, and the swirly-d are all trademarks of Dreamwidth, and
all of the above are associated with the Dreamwidth brand. I'm not sure if
it's the swirl, or the swirly-d that's used more like the LJ-pencil, though.
(Btw, http://www.dreamwidth.org/site/brand may provide more clarification)

And, oops, I meant to say earlier that the shortened form of DW that I've
been seeing on *icons* is the swirly-d. Sorry if that caused any confusion!
