W6ELProp is maybe not as good as VOAProp but it's decent, too. And it's free. You just have to come up with the numbers yourself and enter them. 73, Zack W9SZ On 12/30/08, DAVE WHITE <mausop...@btinternet.com> wrote: Hi all I realise that this is a bit off-topic, so please feel free to reply personally. Who uses a propagation prediction program? Which one do you use? Would you recommend it? In the past I've generally taken little notice of these, but decided to have a play around, so to speak. Along with the usual commercial offerings I found VOAProp ( http://www.g4ilo.com/voaprop.html) which seems reasonably stable, uses currently available data and the ITS VOAcap software. Above all, It's FREE. Being a Yorkshireman who's half Scottish I like FREE stuff :-) Given the caveat that no propagation prediction is foolproof, this program seems to work well. It demonstrated why XU7ACY is always reported at 599plus on 160m by Germans and Russians when I can hardly hear him during the evenings, and also suggested the best time for me. OK, he was still only 449 with me and I had to call long either side of the pileup waiting for him to turn the dial but I did manage to work him at the recommended time - just before his sunrise. The "medium" power/gain signal strength figures seem pessimistic on low bands and optimistic on the higher bands. Has anyone in the group got any further recommendations or can anyone suggest further tweaks or hints with this subject? The more I look into it, the more interesting it becomes. cheers Dave G0OIL ----------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe or subscribe to this list.
