6 meter station is a possibility. QSL routes are: AI5P/CY0 via AI5P,
CY0ZZ via KA3QLF or VK4AAR for VK, JA, etc.. stations. The team is
looking for sponsors to help them cover the large cost of chartering
the Britain Norman Islander aircraft which must be used to land on
the beach at Sable Island. The cost of this charter alone will be
nearly $10,000. Further information is available on their Web site at:
                        http://www.sabledx.com

ated (as far as they know) since the previous expedition of

NA-231. (Operation ABORTED!) Cezar/VE3LYC reports, "Hi Guys, I am
heartbroken to announce that our attempt to activate East
Pen Island had to be aborted. Ken/G3OCA and I have arrived
in Ft. Severn, northern Ontario, based on a long series of
telephone and E-mail communications with the local community
here, who at no point in time provided an indication that
this operation should be cancelled. For the past four days
we have been on a roller-coaster, with the local community
going back and forth between being ready to provide
assistance and withdrawing it. On Thursday, July 19th, after
intense negotiations, a team of four experienced guides/
hunters was proposed and gathered by the local counsel.
Although this increased substantially the cost of our ex-
pedition, we agreed to it, having travelled so far. Late
evening, however, two of the guides dropped out, which left
no opportunity for other sufficiently skilled guides to take
their place. It has to be said that numerous local people
have reported recently an unusual number of polar bears on
the shore for this time of the year - polar bears are
supposed to come to short sometimes after mid-August. Last
August aerial survey of East Pen Island reported 40 polar
bears there. Locals belive that with such an intense recent
activity their number is larger this year. Besides this
danger, colonies of walruses have been reported both on the
shore and on the island, these animals having cubs right now
and therefore being extremely protective - constituting thus
a serious danger in crossing to the island in a small boat.
In view of the above, it was clearly impossible to continue
with our attempt.... 73, Cezar (VE3LYC) and Ken (G3OCA)"

SA-051. Members of the Association of Radioamateurs of Venezuela are
organizing an IOTA DXpedition to Las Aves de Sotavento
Archipelago in August to celebrate 2007 Venezuelan Navy Day.
Their activity will be on CW and SSB on HF and on VHF FM.
           QSL via DL3AMA.

KH3, JOHNSTON ISLAND. Skipper of the USSV Dharma, Susan Meckley, W7KFI,
who was expected to depart sometime last week for Johnston Island
(OC-023, USI OI-006), has once again postponed her departure. Susan
informs OPDX (as she apologizes to everyone) that it seems to look
"like one hell of a hurricane season...." heading her way from the
Mexican area. She states, "If there is a two week lull I will depart
for KH3, but it looks like I am stuck in Honolulu till end of the
season. In any event, propagation is much better in November than in
July/August anyway. I guess the tooth ache that brought me back to
Honolulu was good after all...." She also mentions that she does not
want to get stuck on an island that has a 5 ft. elevation during a
hurricane storm surge and everything goes underwater.

LIGHTHOUSE ACTIVITY. The Greater Norwalk Amatuer Radio Club (GNARC)
will be sponsoring a DXpedition to activate Sheffield Island Lighthouse
for International Lighthouse Weekend (ILLW), August 18-19th. Operation
of N1EV will begin 1600z, August 18th and end around 1800z August 19th.
Activity will be on 80-10 meters SSB/CW/FSK. Operations will take place
in or around the IOTA calling frequencies. Plans are to run at least 2
stations for the entire event. QSL direct to N1EV. SASE for domestic
QSLs; DX send green stamp or IRC. Sheffield Island reference numbers
are: IOTA-NA-136, USI-CT-008 and ARLHS-USA-753.

NEW WAP WEB SITE. The "Worldwide Antarctic Program" (WAP) now has a new
Web site online (old Web page: http://www.ddxc.net/wap). This Web page
is dedicated to Antarctic Chasers. Take a look at:
