The paraphrased quote " I am afraid we have awakened a sleeping giant" was made by Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto, who was the tactical commander of the Pearl Harbor attack. Not sure of the exact date, but U.S. code breakers and radio operators later intercepted a message that he would be visiting Japanese bases in the Solomons and had a surprise revenge minded squadron of U.S. P38s waiting for him. His plane was shot down and Yamamoto was killed.
