3D2, FIJI. Brian, N6IZ, will be active as 3D2IZ from the Island of Namotu
(IOTA OC-121), March 26th through April 6th. Activity will be 80-10 meters,
primarily on CW. QSL to home callsign.
3D2, FIJI (Also KH6 and NA VE7 IOTA OPs). Andre, GM3VLB, will be on holiday
with XYL Veronica and plans to be active as much as possible from the
following IOTA locations:
OC-121 - Beachcomber Island (Mamanucas) from May 26th (morning UTC)
to May 30th (morning UTC) as 3D2LB.
OC-019 - Oahu Island (Hawaii) from May 30th (evening UTC) to June 2nd
(morning UTC). His callsign was not provided.
They will then travel to Vancouver. His XYL, Veronica, will fly home,
and Andre will be joined by Scottish partner Alex, G(M)0DHZ, and son
Niall, VP8NJS, for their VE7 Dxpeditions (No callsigns provided):
NA-036 - Denman Island (BC-022) from June 4th (late evening UTC) to
June 5th (late afternoon UTC).
NA-091 - Malcolm Island (BC-019) from June 5th (late evening UTC) to
June 7th (late evening UTC).
NA-061 - Campbell Island (BC-170) from June 8th (afternoon UTC) to
June 9th (late evening UTC).
NA-061 - Denny Island (BC-171) from June 9th (late evening UTC) to
June 11th (late evening UTC).
NA-075 - Thetis Island (BC-010) from June 12th (late evening UTC) to
June 13th (late afternoon UTC).
5X, UGANDA. Babs/DL7AFS and Lot/DJ7ZG, will be active as 5X1DC from Ssese
Island for one more week until February 23rd. There has been plenty of
activity on 28490, 28086 (RTTY), 24845, 18148, 14195, 14086 (RTTY) and
7053 kHz. QSL via DL7AFS.
A3, TONGA. Five German operators (Irina/DL8DYL, Reinhard/DL8YRM, Thomas/
DL5LYM, Wolfgang/DL4WG and Ralf/DL9DRA) will be active from March 17th
through April 5th. Their callsigns and bands/modes of activity were not

CE9, ANTARCTICA. Mario, CE3BFE, is back once again at Chilean Julio
Escudero Base (WABA CE-11), of the Chilean Antarctic Institute, located
on the Island King Jorge of the Shetlands (AN-010). Look for him to sign
as CE9A. QSL via operator's instructions. Suggested frequencies are:
CW - 7015, 14015, 21015 and 28015 kHz
SSB - 7080, 14150, 21150 and 28505 kHz
Digital - 14070, 21070 and 28070 kHz
D4, CAPE VERDE. Gabriele, IK4UPB, will be active as D44TD in the ARRL
International DX SSB Contest (March 1-2nd) as a Single-Op/Single Band
(band not known) entry. QSL via CT1EKF.
DAYTON HAMVENTION. All 160 meter enthusiasts are cordially invited to the
Topband banquet on Friday night, May 16th, of the 2003 Hamvention in Dayton.
This annual event brings together 160 meter fans from around the world for
food, drink and comraderie. The event will be held at Neil's Heritage House
Restaurant (2323 Schantz Ave, Dayton); 6:30 PM Social Hour <Cash Bar> and
8:00 PM Dinner. Cost is 27 USD each, which includes the complete dinner,
taxes, and gratuities. Choose pork tenderloin, broiled salmon, or breast
of chicken supreme. Make your dinner selection and pay in advance to:

DP1, ANTARCTICA. Felix, DL5XL, will be active as DP1POL in the RSGB IOTA
Contest (July 26-27th) possibly as a Single-Op (TBD). Activity will be from
the German research base "Neumayer" in the Antarctica (IOTA AN-016), using
750 watts of output power and wire antennas. By the way, he was heard
this past weekend in the contest. QSL via DL1ZBO.
FG, GUADELOUPE (Bird Op). Wayne, W9AE, will be active on the AO40 satellite
from Deshaies, Guadeloupe (Grid FK96) from February 21-26th. Activity
will be on CW and SSB. QSL to home call.
HR, HONDURAS. Tom, W0GLG, will be active from Puerta Limpera, a town on
the North East corner of the country, until March 5th. His callsign was
not provided. Tom will try to check into the 247 net or hang around the
frequency 14195 kHz when he has a chance. Between March 2-4th, look for
Tom to be on Cochinos Cayos (IOTA NA-160), a small island off the coast
that is rather hard to get to. He states, "It is not as popular as Roatan
and is much more sought after in the IOTA circles... I will be on 14260,
21260, 28460 + or -." Tom will be operating barefoot using a Kenwood
(TS-570) with a vertical, and a couple of half squares. QSL via W0GLG.
IOTA NEWS...................
AS-079. Takeshi "Take", JI3DST, will be active as JI3DST/6 from
Miyako Island (Miyako-jima Hirara-City Okinawa-ken), March
20th (0700z) to March 23rd (0000z). Activity will be on
40/17/15/12/10/6 meters SSB. Take states he will be looking
for AF and SA stations and DX stations on 6 meters. QSL
ONLY via the Bureau.
EU-177. The Grantham ARC will be operating as OZ/G0GRC from Fur
Island EU-177, June 2-6th. The club's QSL manager will be
G0RCI: Alan Gibson, 1 Oakleigh Rd, Grantham, LIncs, NG31 7NN,
UK. QSL cards will NOT be required as all contacts will be
QSLed within 28 days of their return. Any cards received
direct (with SAE and 1 IRC or greenstamp) will be answered
the same way.
NA-052. Several members of the Magnolia DX Association will be active
from Cat Island, Mississippi (USI MS002S) from April 4-6th.
Cat Island is a barrier island located about 6 miles south
of Gulfport, MS, in the Mississippi Sound. This is a follow-on
trip to one held in September 2002, with expanded on-air
time. They will be active on 80-10 meters (including the WARC
bands) on CW and SSB using special event callsign K5C from
multiple stations. Team organizers are Bill/K5YG, Glenn/K2FF,
Darryl/KD5CQT and Randy/W5UE. QSL via K2FF. The team once
again wishes to express their gratitude to the National Parks
Service, Gulf Islands National Seashore for granting written
permission for their operation. The Magnolia DX Association's

ADDED NOTE: Randy, W5UE, would like to announce that QSLs
from their September 2002, trip have been received from the
printer. All direct requests have been answered and put into
the mail on February 13th. They apologize for the delay in
getting cards out. Future requests will continue to be answered
the same way received...direct in with SASE or adequate postage
funds gets direct out, and bureau in gets bureau out. Cards
for the upcoming trip will be ordered in advance, and they hope
to be able to answer direct requests within weeks of the end
of the expedition.
OC-NEW. Thomas Marlowe, VK3ZZ, informs OPDX that he is leading a
DXpedition to activate a new IOTA in the South Australia
State West Centre Group. The team of Thomas/VK3ZZ, Keith/VK3FT,
Jack/VK3WWW and VK3QI will operate from Waldegrave Island East
which is off the South Australian Coast from April 16-21st.
Activity will be on all HF bands (except 160m) CW/SSB. A
special callsign will be used (TBA later). Thomas states,
"The necessary island access permit has been obtained and
a boat chartered."
SA-042. A DXpedition is planned for the Island of the Mexiana (DIB-69)
for May 21-25th. This will be a joint operation by the Brazil
DX Net and the Portuguese DX Group. The team currently has
the following operators: Mor/CT1AHU, Roc/PY8EA, Daniel/PT7BI,
Roberto/PT2GTI, Lun/PT2HF, Sam/CT1EEN and Helmut/LU1YU. The
callsign will be announced one day before the operation and
the QSL Manager will be announced during the operation.

SA-070. On February 22-23rd, members of Southern Cross DX Group (SCDXG)
will activate Quiriquina Island, in the Bio-Bio Province Group.
Grid Loc. is FF33lj. The team will operate on all bands from
160m-70cm on the SSB/CW/FM modes. The special Chilean callsign,
3G5Q, has been issued for this DXpedition. Team Leader and

ADDED NOTE: Quiriquina Island is fully administered under the
jurisdiction of the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile). Fortunately,
they have been granted a special permit to stay on the Island
and transmit from there along with their transportation on a
Chilean Navy ship.
KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND. Bill, NH6D, is expected to be active as KH4/NH6D for
a few days this week. Watch between February 21-22nd. QSL via N6FF.
LIGHTHOUSE/LIGHTSHIP ACTIVITY. Members from the Croatian IOCA Group,
Boro/9A3KB and Emir/9A6AA, will be active from the Lighthouse of Plicina
Paklena (LH-0708), on February 22nd, and Lighthouse of Barbaran (LH-1018),
on February 23rd, weather permitting, on 20, 15 and 40 meters, SSB. After
the LH activity, they plan to activate the Island of Sv. Nikola (CI-118,
EU-110), on February 23rd, on same frequencies.
LX, LUXEMBOURG. Operators Michel/LX1KQ, Alain/LX1UN and Philippe/LX2AJ
will be active as LX9UN in the CQ 160-Meter SSB Contest (February 21-23rd)
as a Multi-Op entry. QSL via LX1NJ.
NH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Kuroi Kazuhiko, JH0MGJ, informs OPDX that he will
be active as AL5A/NH0 from Saipan in the CQWW WPX CW Contest (next May)
as a Single-Op/All Band entry. QSL via JH0MGJ through the JARL bureau.
OX3, GREENLAND (Op now QRT). Joergen, OZ8AE, informs OPDX that Kim,
OX3FV, is now QRT from Groennedal, Greenland. He is back in Denmark and
his callsign is now OZ5FV (E-mail address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED] )

P3, CYPRUS. Operators G3SJJ, G3SVL and G3UEG will be active as P3F
in the CQ 160-Meter SSB Contest (February 21-23rd) as a Multi-Op entry.

PIRATE QSL MANAGER. OPDX has been informed that there is a "Pirate QSL
Manager" operating in France as of January 2003. This individual claims
to be the QSL Manager for as many as 25-30 DX callsigns (he may be the
same person who tried this from Brazil a few years ago). Please do not

PY0S, ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL ROCKS. The "425 DX NEWS" reports that Joca,
PS7JN, is planning to return to here during the first half of April. His
activity will be on 40/20/15/10 meters SSB and RTTY (other modes and bands
will depend on the equipment he takes with him). Further details are

QSL INFO AND NEWS....................
HELP NEEDED (Update/Mystery)! Last week OPDX had been asked to help
find/locate the right QSL route for the Johnston Island operation during
September 1992 by KH3AF. Several have sent replies to us and here are
the results:
Best result: Richard Giles, P.O. Box 1632, APO AP 96555 (This address
was updated during 1999 on a German QSL Database).
Not recommended: Richard Giles, P.O. Box 976, APO SF 96305-5000
(This is an old address which was good at one
time, however, Richard has moved since then).
The last lead: Richard D. Giles, KH3AF, was operator ex-WH6CJQ and was
mentioned by many now as NH6YG. However, it was brought
to OPDX's attention by a INDEXA staff member, that
Richard Giles is now AC7CM. However, AC7CM is listed
on the Buckmaster and QRZ web pages as "Rick D." and not
"Richard D." with an Utah address. You "may" want to
try this address. There is also an E-mail address
on QRZ.com that we sent a message to, and it bounced.
Lastly: OPDX was told that Richard was spotted a year and
half ago doing some diving on Bikini Atoll. Maybe
this can lead to something else. For now, it is
a mystery.
AH3D LOG SEARCH VIA E-MAIL AVAILABLE. "The Daily DX" reports that you
can now use the AH3D log search to look up your QSOs by doing the
following:
1. Send an E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
2. Subject: "Call" - only one call per subject line
3. Body of message should be blank.
4. Send E-mail message.
The process takes about 30-90 seconds. You will then receive a response
back in the form of an E-mail stating your QSOs that are in the AH3D
log. If you find that you are not in the log, please read the complete
E-mail carefully. Remember, QSL requests for AH3D should be sent to

A member of the "AT Contest Club" in Georgia was active as 4L8A in this

Station 8S5X was activated in Sweden this past weekend in the ARRL
CW Contest. Operators were SM5HJZ, SM0GNS, SM0OGQ, SM0HPL, SM0IHR,

IOCA CHECKPOINTS. Emir, 9A6AA (IOCAGroup Manager/IOCA Manager), informs

N7NG, during last weekend's ARRL CW DX Contest as a Single-Op/All

FY5KE was activated by Oliver, F5MZN, during last weekend's ARRL

A surprise operation was heard this past week by KJ6BZ from Johnston
Atoll. Apparently, the KJ6BZ license had been renewed and is valid.
Operators Bob/V73HT and Bert/V73GOD were only active for a few days.

Javier, LU5FF, in Santa Fe, Argentina, who was active in this past
weekend's ARRL CW Contest, states to please QSL via EA7JX.
Mat, F5SHQ, was active as MJ0ASP from Jersey during this past weekend's
ARRL CW Contest as Single-Op/Single Band (20m) entry. QSL via F5SHQ.
T77CD was active in the RTTY contest and has a declared score of
2,608,725 and 1,590 QSOs. QSL only direct via I0MWI.
TG0AA, in the ARRL International DX CW Contest, was activated by Dennis,
K7BV, as a Single-Op/All Band entry. QSL to TG0AA CBA DIRECT at:

Vasilij, RW6HS, informs OPDX that he is now the QSL Manager for UA0BD
(ex-RX6LMQ/0) Dickson Island (IOTA AS-005).
SPECIAL EVENT. The Eastern and Mountain District Radio Club (EMDRC) in
Melbourne, Australia, will be activating the special callsign, VI3GP,
during the period 0000z March 6th until 0000z March 11th. The special
callsign celebrates the running of the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne on
March 10th. QSL via the Bureau, or direct to VK3ER: P.O. Box 87, MITCHAM,
Victoria, Australia 3132 (with sufficient return postage). The VI3GP
callsign also qualifies as a Club callsign towards the EMDRC Southern

SPECIAL EVENT. On a stormy winter's night 85 years ago, the S.S. Florizel
left the harbour of St John's, NF bound for Halifax and New York. The S.S.
Florizel, pride of the Red Cross Line and with 137 souls on board, made a
fatal navigational error and crashed onto the rocky shore 12 miles from
Cape Race. At 4:50 AM the British Naval wireless station BZM at Mount Pearl,
NF, near St John's, received an SOS from MZL; the Florizel. The Marconi
operator Cecil Carter sent the message without waiting for a confirmation.
He knew at best he had only moments before the power from the ship would
fail as the seas were crashing over the stern. The Marconi House on board
was a life saver; firstly for providing the means to send the distress call
and secondly as the only safe shelter for up to 30 people during the 27 hour
wait for rescue.
February 24th, 2003, will mark the anniversary and is being commemorated
at Admiralty House Museum and Archives (Formerly H.M. Wireless station BZM),
the site of a new permanent exhibition about the Florizel disaster of 1918.
The special event call VO1MZL will be used, and it is planned to be a yearly
CW-only event. VO1BZM is also a Marconi site and will also be in operation
for International Marconi Day in April. The Museum web site is:

SPECIAL EVENT. The Oakdale Amateur Radio Club in Cape Town has been granted
a special event callsign for the "CRICKET WORLD CUP" being played in the
Republic of South Africa. The callsign is ZS03CWC and will be operating
on all bands 80-10 meters until March 23rd. Please keep an ear open for

for ZS stations and via ZS1AU on QRZ.COM for DX stations. Please include
a self addressed stamped envelope for a special QSL card which will be
available after the March 23rd.
ST0, SUDAN (Update). Floyd, N5FG, informs OPDX that the ST0RY operation
will start on March 16th (after 2-3 days for paperwork and going through
customs). They will leave the evening of April 2nd. Please refer to OPDX.592

TI, COSTA RICA. Bill, W8QZA, will be active as TI5N as QRP in the ARRL
International DX SSB Contest (March 1-2nd) and as a Single-Op/All Band
entry. There will be no activity outside of the contest. QSL via W3HNK.
WARD 2003 AWARD. The World Amateur Radio Day (WARD) Award is devoted to
commemorate the World Amateur Radio Day celebrated by IARU on April 18th
each year. It is issued by the MK QTC - Polish Amateur's Radio Journal
with PZK (Polish Amateur Radio Union) support. The WARD Award is available
for at least the following number of contacts: 10 QSOs on HF bands or
5 QSOs on VHF bands. All contacts must be made on April 18th between
0000-2400z. A standard application form including the list of QSOs should
be sent before May 31, 2003, to: Redakcja MK QTC, ul. Wielmozy 5b,
82-337 Suchacz-Zamek, Poland. The price of the WARD Award is 5 USD or
5 Euro. The full color award is 210 x 297mm. The WARD Award is available

YN, NICARAGUA. Operator Frosty/K5LBU, Ed/W5GCX and possibly others will
be active as YN2EJ in the CQ World Wide DX SSB Contest (October 25-26th)
as a Multi-Single entry. The group plans to arrive on Wednesday night
before the contest and spend Thursday putting up antennas and whatever.

YI, IRAQ. Steve, OM3JW, the Father/QSL Manager for Mike, OM2DX, who was
active from YI1BGD, reports that Mike is now QRT. The Slovak Embassy in
Baghdad was closed down, and his son Mike is on his way at home. Steve will
get the log from Mike with his last days of operation after his arrival
at home. Be patient please.

days between February 17-19th. Activity will be SSB only on the following

ring from the fax/data switch box) and then dial four quick ones ("1111").
(NOTE: Some FAX machines that send single "BEEPS" every second will not
have to do this step.) 3) The phone will pick up and after the "BEEP"
leave your voice message or FAX.
