If "start onboard minimized" is enabled, the whole shell UI does not appear after typing user password and hitting Enter in the login screen. Cursor can be moved and wallpaper is visible (also SSHing works so the PC does not crash). steps to recreate: 1) Install Ubuntu 11.04 2) on first boot, in the login screen, open assistive tech and enable on-screen keyboard. 3) login using the on-screen keyboard. Unity comes up as intended. 4) go to application "Assistive Technologies", enable assistive technologies, enable "password dialogs as normal windows", select onboard as the keyboard application and enable "run at start". 4) open onboard, go to settings and enable "start onboard minimized". 5) reboot 6) login screen and on-screen keyboard appears. 7) use keyboard to login, pressing enter after typing password. 8) Unity does not come up, only cursor and wallpaper visible. steps to revert: 1) reboot 2) in login screen, select "Ubuntu Classic" as the session. 3) login, Gnome 2 comes up as expected. 4) open onboard and disable option "start onboard minimized". 5) logout/reboot 6) login with "Ubuntu" as the session (to use Unity). So with Gnome 2, onboard's start minimized works as expected, while in Unity the whole shell fails to appear when logging in. Workaround is to not use "start onboard minimized" (or not to use Unity ;).
