It should be a design bug. Adding a default focus to the first candidate while the UI focus is the input box isn't really technically easy to implement. But it's absolutely necessary to implement that, when I use gnome 3 shell to do application search the first candidate is focused by default. For any developer who wants to fix this, gnome 3 implementation is a good start, I think.

This mean that hitting return immediately after typing will open the first application in the list. This is good. What isn't good is that there is no visual cue telling the user that the first application has focus, rather the impression is given that they must first press the down arrow in order to move focus to the first application. This is illustrated in the attached screenshot. When I pressed [RETURN] in that particular situation, the screenshot utility was opened, despite there being no indication that this would happen. When the down arrow is pressed, the first application becomes highlighted. I think this highlight should be applied as soon as the first search result become available so that the user can immediately see that the first application is currently selected.
