Matthew, sorry about the incomplete information. I forgot to mention
that I'm using gnome-panel and a gnome-flashback(ish) session (xmonad +
gnome). It's in that context that I'm using indicator-applet-complete.
It worked fine with saucy. Now, I had to add the notification-area
applet to gnome-panel (alt-right click > Add notification area).

I can see the indicator-applet package in synaptic, and it's not marked
as local or obsolete. Are you sure it isn't supposed to be in trusty?
