As per design decision, double-click should be disabled on menus by
default.

However, you can actually turn this, setting a timeout on 
com.canonical.Unity.IntegratedMenus "double-click-wait" setting.
By setting that value to something like 100ms (this or 150 worked well for me), 
you delay the menu activation for the defined ms, so that you can be able to 
click again to get the window maximized. Based on how much fast you double 
click you can keep this value lower and make menus faster to show (when not 
double clicking).

Unfortunately there's no way other than delaying the menu activation to
achieve this, as we can't predict what the user wants to do :)

  For the longest time double-tapping on the title-bar of an application has 
maximised it.
  LIM breaks this.

  To reproduce.

  Open Gedit. 
  Ensure the window is not maximised.
  Attempt to maximise the window by double tapping in the title bar
  Note that you can't maximise via this method anymore if you double tab in the 
are where the menu appears.
