Btw, you still need to disable 'Keep Hangouts on top of other windows'
in the Hangouts extension to make it work properly.

Title:
Unity blocks Hangouts system tray icon, doesn't work

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Trying to use Google Hangouts extension with Google Chrome (or
  Chromium).

In other desktop environments (Mac OS X, Windows 7, KDE, Gnome) it
adds a system tray icon which you can use to raise the main window or
  conversation windows when minimized.

In Ubuntu, you can open the window from Chrome using the extension
icon on the top right but after closing a window you can't use that
again. It is now depending on being opened via the system tray icon.
