I doubt very much that problems with a release upgrade are caused by a bug in Unity.
I'm going out on a limb and assuming this situation was resolved by the reported a few years ago, since Ubuntu 12.10 is not even a supported release any more. ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of DX Packages, which is subscribed to unity in Ubuntu. I fixed this using a USB boot and a program to fix the GRUB. Rebooted and Ubuntu 12.10 loaded to the splash screen, but screen was not fitted the same as previous installation. After logging in, there is no visible or working: dash, sidebar, topbar, minimize close and expand buttons, unity. All my files are still here but currently the terminal is the only route of operation. 1.
