Public bug reported:

notify-osd does not display properly when compiz is disabled (in
preferences > appearance).

It appears as a black rounded rectangle instead, with no text or image.
When compiz is disabled, the notification should automatically degrade
down to a nontransparent overlay -- or simply revert back to the old
notification systems. I would prefer if we could continue to use notify-
osd, since there will be some changes to upstream, and it would be nice
to have a consistent user experience -- with compiz on and off.

I'd be happy to help test if help is needed to test. I'm also attaching
an image of the notification that appears when i change the volume on my
laptop using buttons, so you can get an idea of how ugly it looks.
