You must be running an old version of notify-osd. Because this is not
happening for the latest version coming from the jaunty repository. As a
test I tried these two examples here...
notify-send "Joe "User" Doe" "What's up dude?" -i
notification-message-im
notify-send "Joe \"User\" Doe" "What's up dude?" -i notification-message-im
In both cases I got the correctly written username like...
Joe "User" Doe
in the notification-bubble.
