Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Jaunty RC 64-bit
Related Applications: Pidgin 2.5.5-1ubuntu8 & VLC Media Player 0.9.9a-2ubuntu1
Notify-osd version: 0.9.11-0ubuntu3
---

While watching a movie using VLC Media Player in full screen mode, the
notify-osd still pops-up/shows-up if it receives notifications, in my
case from Pidgin.

Additionally, the movie in full screen flickers for every notify-osd
notification. First when it shows-up, then second when it disappears.
At first it is easy to ignore, but after I got a continuous pidgin
notification, looking at the screen starts to get painful (I can't think
of the appropriate word).

Also, it gets distracting over time.

---
My thoughts/suggestions would be all or one of the ff:
1) An option to temporarily 'silence' notify-osd; and/or
2) A feature wherein only the important notifications will show-up (for example
a critical or security update).

As for Pidgin (and maybe other similar applications),
3) An option to set which notifications will the notify-osd 'notify' when there
is a full screen application running like VLC. This way, a user can choose to
be notified of (for example) IM Messages but all others are ignored. Or
another user can choose to ignore all IM Messages.

** Affects: notify-osd
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
