This is a design-decision to avoid a user being flooded/spammed with
notifications. At anyone time the maximum number of notifications
visible is two (one asynchronous, one synchronous). Asynchronous
notifications are used for common notifications from applicatinos (e.g.
IM-message of buddy logged in, download of a file finished). Synchronous
notifications are meant for immediate system feedback (user turned
speaker volume up/down via special MM-keys on keyboard, media ejected,
user changed screen-brightness via special MM-keys on keyboard).

notify-osd only shows 1 notification at a time, which is annoying (feature

Status in Notify OSD: Won't Fix

Bug description:
notification-daemon will happily show more than one alert at a time. notify-osd
does not.

in the original demo video, notify-osd was displaying multiple alerts and it
looked nice. this doesn't work right in notify-osd-0.9.12.
