Thanks Paul, The two items you mention were ok, and yes, I have Win 98. The
good news is everything works now!

I switched over to another printer (a Cannon BJC 5100, also an old parallel
printer), and labels printed fine. Went back to the HP DeskJet 500 and now
it works also. I have no idea why, I had re-started many times.  I wish I
had tried the other printer before I started this thread!

Oh well, I gained a lot, thanks to Terry, WK0F for the suggestion of
cleaning out my Temp files, I had never done that and got rid of over 300 Mb
of junk. It didn't help the original problem, but it sure can't hurt.
