If he writes his preferences to a .INI file, then imports that into
the preferences of the new version of DX4WIN, that will take care of
99% of the hardware setup (unless he has an ICOM radio, in which case
the baud rate will need to be set manually unless it's the default
rate of 4800.

It's easy to install the new version in parallel to the old one, then
do the migration.  He'll still have the old working version while the
new one is being set up.

You already have a pointer to the upgrade notes I wrote.
