I have written to the listserve twice requesting help on a big problem that I had with DX4WIN which was crashing and being corrupted by forced updates and reboots from Microsoft. AD1C gave me sage advice to prevent Windows from taking control and forcing updates and shut downs without properly closing DX4WIN. I have changed my computer so that it now downloads but I govern when it installs and reboots and it will always be after I safely close all problems.
I then tried downloading new versions of DX4WIN and erased all the files that I could find (other than my log and license files). However, the program would not work well. The most fundamental problem continued to be that DX4Win did not color code my spots by evaluating my logbook, past QSOs, past confirmations etc. I also could not see a country matrix showing me what I had worked, had confirmed, or had QSLs in the mail for on each band of each country that I worked. That is what makes DX4WIN most valuable for me as I chase new countries from 160 to 6. So I wrote back a second time, and again I got some good suggestions. However, Wayne WA1PMA wrote me what seemed to be the simplest and most fundamental approach. He suggested that I create a completely new folder with a completely different name and download another version of 8.05 into it. I did that, and I copied my license file into this same new folder, and tried the new software with the "sample log" book. Then I logged on to my home cluster and immediately, I saw that each spot coming in was evaluated against the sample log, and I knew that it all was working again. Then I moved my old actual log file into the save folder, got Jim's newest CTY file, and presto, I was completely back in business. I needed to set a few parameters in the preferences but I am now completely repaired. I thought that I should document this so if it happens to someone else, they might find this idea in an analysis of the archives. I want to thank everyone that took your time to offer suggestions and advice. I greatly appreciate it. THANKS !! Particular thanks to WA1PMA who gave me the idea of a simple yet elegant solution. Thanks. 73 W5FI Gary ______________________________________________________________ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
