Steve,

I have DX4WIN version 8.05 installed on both Win7-64 bit and 32-bit. Runs
with no problem. If you use the LPT port for CW keying you have to install a
driver (No experience her, as I use my keyer and paddle).

Install was no problem in the default folder. If you try to install in the
Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder, you may run into some issues.
Windows 7 denies browsing access to these folders by default and it causes
problems with some apps, so I really recommend you install to C:\dx4winxxx.

My old faithful PC running XP is getting a bit long in the tooth, so I have
a new W7 machine on order.

This may well have been covered off on previous posts, I admit to not yet
having done a complete search, but what's the current thinking on pit falls
to be aware of when doing a new installation ?

(this, or similar, will be on the microHAM & Writelog reflectors also, so
apologies if you read this more than once)

This is timely... I have a Windows 7 64-bit machine on order as well, and have
the same questions.

GL with the new computers.
I prefer XP for ham use but i use win 7 in my laptop which occasionaly use
for ham radio. Install dx4win outside programs directory. MMTTY also.
Generally ham programs is good to install outside programs directory. This
is probably because our programs usually update themselves. Writelog goes to
its default directory but is has solved many problems it had at the start.
Microham router works ok but you can not manage soundcard via router
anymore. Windows keeps this function for them.
Finally i think that win7 are good, maybe better than xp for general use but
not for ham radio... Ofcourse this is my opinion only

DX4WIN runs just find on Windows Vista/7, if you install it in the right place!

If you are re-installing v.7 or earlier, the default installation path
will be something like:

    C:\Program Files\dx4win

I recommend NOT putting the program there, instead install here:

    C:\dx4win

Windows Vista/7 puts special protections on the files in the Program
Files directory, making them difficult to change or even find in some
cases. You can google search for "Windows Virtual Store" and read
more if you wish.

DX4WIN v.8 installs in C:\dx4win by default.

Remember that if you re-install from the original installation file,
the data files will be as old as that file -- they are NOT updated
when new files come out. Use the DX4WIN Data Updater to get the
latest files:

Right-click on the DX4WIN program icon and choose "Run as
Administrator". This should allow the program to copy the driver
file.

Remember, version 6.0x came out many years before Vista and Windows 7.
If you need LPT keying, you're best off upgrading to DX4WIN 8.

It may be best for me to upgrade... FYI, I've attempted to run as admin and
still the same error.

The main issue with Vista onwards is the Directory trees "Program Files"
and "Program files (x86)" are not normally writable... a change long
overdue. What I did to get around this was create a new directory tree I
call "programs" and install there, along with some other ham stuff that
would have the same issues. The only other issue is the installation of
the LPT driver if you need it. Just follow the directions.

You can download the "demo" version of 8.05 and try it out, it won't
break your existing installation. MAKE SURE to copy your .DXL (log)
file first to the new DX4WIN save directory, and open *that* file, not
the one in your 6.04 directory. DX4WIN will convert the file format,
and once saved, there's no going back to 6.04.

Also make sure to update all the data files, the ones in the
installation file are old.
