His other option is to start a brand new log file with a name like
<callsign>2015.xxx and track it separately.  He can always combine the logs
later if he wants to.

George, DX4WIN can only process spots against the log you have opened.
It sounds like the log are you opening contains other QSOs besides
those made in 2015.  Using F8 to "start" your log at 01/01/2015 won't
change how the DX spots are processed.   Using a date selection
(Filter | Selection) will, but you will have to manually choose this
selection each time you open your log.

Send me the .DXL file that you *think* contains only 2015 QSOs.
