This is true and will only become more restrictive.  Some companies make
special drivers to try and get around this, but even they are becoming
difficult options and prone to failure.  Just look at the postings about
folks trying to make CW work on new systems with the new derived serial
ports and you quickly realize that hardware is changing.  The only solution
that I see for the future is that the makers of ham oriented devices are
going to have to change their mindsets and start writing their interfaces in
compliance with the Windows hardware architecture.  Traditionally, ham
devices use the bully approach by setting leads in peculiar ways, turning
leads on and off at the hardware UART level and so forth.  Those practices
have always been non standard but it could be forced to work.  Nowadays, the
OS and hardware are not so forgiving.
