Andy,

Several problems with your plan. Unlike the days of MSDOS where you just
recreate the directory, copy all the files back, and away you go, Windows
software is not that way. When you install Windows software, part of the
process is the registration of certain shared .dll files, folder locations,
and creation of various drivers and .INI files. This requires that you
actually perform the installation from an installation CD. You cannot just
copy files. After you do the installation, you can then copy in your user
data files such as any report files you might have created, as long as you
put them in the proper place.

Secondly, DXbase 98 is going on five years old and there have been hundreds
of new/improved features added. Plus, DXbase 98 is not Y2K and will cause
you some trouble both now and in the future because any dates that you enter
will not be stored in a Y2K compliant manner. Various import utilities try
to adjust automatically for this when upgrading, but time is running out for
this process to be viable because at a certain point, software must make
some assumptions about the data it reads and you may find that it is not
possible to import your data to anything.

Hope this helps,
Courtney

Subject: [DXBase] DX Base restore from CD backup?

I am about to put DXbase 98 back on my hard drive after a hard drive
re-format. I have my original CD but I also have all the DxBase 98 files,
including reports and logs, on a CD that I burned with as a backup. I
copied the files from my CD to E drive, I did not use the backup commands.
Will the back up files work or will I have to start out installing the
original CD?
