You were right of course. Apparently the cluster I had been using was down,
and then my HOST file was so old that the next several I tried were also
non-operational. Finally got to one that worked and all is well.

Didn't someone once post an up-to-date HOST file of operational cluster
sites? Is there one available that is reasonably up-to-date. I looked on the
DXBase site and didn't see one...
