...But I've done it a few times.
Here is how it works.
Obviously you have a account with LoTW.
For your home log.
Let's talk about this.
While logs from different calls and different qth's inside the same country can
be linked
as one,
dxpeditions logs from different entities can not.
No different than hardcard qsl's.

I'll give myself as an example.
I have qsl's for 3 calls, WN9VOL, WA9VOL, W9OL.
All were created using the certificate for my present call, W9OL.
Consequently DXCC sees them as the same person/call.

Now I have LoTW qsls for band/modes that I've never received hardcards for.
To obtain the credit, You go to the AWARDS menu after logging in to your LoTW
account.
There you will find a window listing all the calls you have.
you select the callsign you wish to apply for credit.
In My case, I select W9OL=United States of America
The Account Status will show you a brief stat of how many credit you have that
can be
applied.
The Modify Account establishes your account and where you can link other call
signs.
This is where I told it to link the credits for WN9VOL and WA9VOL to W9OL

Follow the other tabs and instructions and it will show you how to submit these
for
credit.
You can pick and choose.
Sometimes you already received a hardcard and the LoTW credit would be a
duplicate.
(you can choose the LoTW credit and not submit the hard card if you like)

Now comes the slightly tricky part.
You can choose to submit these qsls for credit by themselves as a separate
submission
or
Link it to a Hardcard submission you have mailed into the DXCC desk.
(I don't do card checkers so not sure how to link to that one)

When you send in your hardcards, you indicate on the form that this is a liked
submission
with the LoTW submission.
(this makes it one BIG submission and you don't get charged as if it was two
separate
submissions)
(only your first submission of the year is free, subsequent subs are subject to
$10.00
fee)

I've done this twice now, it's really painless once you understand the process.
The advantage of using the LoTW credits is that you don't have to pay to mail
them.
The fee for LoTW credit submission is a sliding scale where hardcard fees are
$0.05 each
after x number (I think 125, but can't remember)
So the more LoTW you have it gets cheaper where as the more hardcards you have
gets
costlier.

Hope this helps, feel free to contact me if you need clarification.
(I'm too dumb to be confused easily.) at least that's what my XYL says.
