I've never exchanged an IRC myself, Garth, but airmail postage out of
Japan is 110 yen and my IRC's are stamped "150 yen" so that makes me
think they would be redeemed for the current airmail postage, as
indicated in the legend on the coupon. But still best to stick with the
new ones--at least for the rest of 2006.

Sending them to the country of issue can be useless also as they only
get enough postage to post a letter within Japan from each IRC. So
you have to send 3 or 4 for airmail reply.

I no longer buy the old style and when I get them I redeem them
quickly as it is always a struggle to get rid of them even at my
regular post office where I have been exchanging them for over 20 years.
