Thanks to a couple tips I have resolved the logging issue. By changing the
PACING command to a lower number (was 50, now 1), DXbase now grabs band/mode
info from the TS870. It still is slow to respond to commands, but it works.
Thanks for the help!

Subject: [Dxbase] TS870 & HF interface

Hi all. Having a wierd problem I just can't figure out. Been through all the
DXbase help files. DXbase controls the HF radio fine (albiet quite slowly)
when clicking on cluster spots. Selects both VFOs OK when working split.
However, when I am manually logging QSOs, the CTRL indicator illuminates on
the 870 as if it is retrieving freq & band data from the radio, but DXbase
doesn't populate the data at all. It logs the "defaults" set in options. The
radio & DXbase are set to COM1, 9600, 1 & none. The port is set the same in
the computer device manager. I have set & reset endlessly both radio &
DXbase. I have "populate HF data from radio interface" checked in logging
options. I have reset the CPU/menu on the TS870. I have no clue as to why
this isn't working, yet sends data OK to the rig. Any ideas out there?
