On 13 May, Drew Smith shouted:
-> K - it's mux.
->
-> I'm having serious issues with Redhat right now - we really aren't
-> liking each other much. Out of sheer frustration, I just reinstalled
-> from scratch.
->
-> My story. Work says "Hey, you know linux, come to R&D!". I love
-> this idea - linux at work is a Good Thing. Downfall - I'm not allowed
-> to use anything but RedHat 5.0. So, being a longtime slackware user, I
-> immediately grabbed the ImageMagick bin tar.gz's, plugins, etc,
-> installed them. Somehow this gargled with my libraries - hacking around
-> it and changing a LOT of symlinks by hand finally got me into E long
-> enough to impress my co-workers and whiten my teeth - but then it
-> pooched itself.
->
-> It seemed for a while that it was only dying when I ran ldconfig -
-> figured that one out, I had a load of mispointed libs etc.
->
-> Then, finally, it ceased to work. I don't remember the specifics of
-> why, but it was officially toasted, so I just decided to reinstall -
-> nothing important that wasn't backed up on my box at work anyway.
->
-> So, here I am with a vanilla RH5 box. I've installed libtiff,
-> libpng, libjpeg, libz, libgif and imlib 1.3 from RPM's. Enlightenment
-> wouldn't compile until I did the Makefile fix and added the -lImlib etc
-> by hand (btw - imlib installed itself but couldn't find itself until I
-> linked libImlib.so to libImlib.so.1.3.0 by hand). Now, it compiles, but
-> segfaults with a "Th-Th-Th-Th-Tha-That's Me Going (*insert obscene sound
-> here*) Folks!".
->
-> Any ideas on this one? I haven't heard of a generic fix, but then
-> again, for the amount of time I've had to IRC lately, that's not saying
-> much. I dislike Redhat thoroughly.
okay.. they story: never just go nabbing slackware or such libs (ie
binaries) at will and putitng them ona GLIBC (note ntoe note <- GLIBC)
system.. its nto rh.. tis a combo of glibc and that evryhting is
compield for different versions of different libs... RH put togetehr a
dist so everything in the dist works together.. if u go simply nuking
bits wiht yer own stuff... KABOOM.. if u dont knwo whats goign on u
canblow thngs up (worst case is nuking yer libc.. :) )
1. instal imagemagick and all libs (libjpeg, libgif etc.) from rpm.s..
they are made for RH5.0/glibc and work. it will save you LOTs and LOTs
and LOTS of time and pain.
2. once all these are installed (imlbi too - you can get 1.4 snapshot
if you like and inctall that now too ontp of whatever u have - rememebr
to do ./configure --prefix=/usr so install relativ to /usr not
/usr/local (sinc eimlib is alerady installed realitve to /usr).
3. now compile and install E.
the fun can now continue.
RH isnt that bad. if u just get used to rpm as opposed to tar as an
archiving/packaging tool it will save you HOURS of work in future.
reading up about rpm might also be an idea so u know how to use it.
(and how not to.. rpm allows u to override it, assuming if u do you
know wmore than rpm does.. but in many cases rpm knows more than you do
and using --force and --nodeps liberally in installing isn't a very
good idea unless you REALLY REALLY REALLY know what yer doing - and if
things blow up then u only have yerself to blame).
-> Cheers,
-> - mux.
