More news about E on my Powerbook 2400... I just compiled and installed Enlightenment
DR13 on the same Powerbook 2400, and it runs very stable. After installing DR14, I
didn't need to install any more packages for DR13 in order for it to compile.
This is even more amazing than getting E14 to compile because DR13 has no configure
script and was written for Intel Linux. Compiling with 'make' was so fast, and
generated some warnings, I was sure something went wrong. But when I ran E and
configured it properly, it was fine.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to successfully compile Eterm, xflame or xripple,
the source for these doesn't appear to be LinuxPPC compatible. Right now I'm trying to
get Econfig installed. I want to change the mapping of the buttons on the left and the
menus to my liking. I need to update Tcl and Tk to 8.0.
The only problems I've seen so far with E DR13 on the Powerbook2400/LinuxPPC2.1.24 are:
- programs that are iconified -- when clicking on the icon, the full window appears
for a moment, then jumps back to an icon. I can make it a window permanently by
dragging the icon out of the icon box. This happensd to most but not all programs --
clicking an icon for the console window works fine.
- I've lost windows that accidentally get moved outside the bounds of one of the
pages. The "f12" command in DR14 will fix this, until then I can't get the window
back. I can select the lost window from the windows list, but no way to make it
visible.
- it doesn't always exit properly -- sometimes I have to kill the X server (with X's
built-in escape key sequence option-power) and then the key bindings seem to be
corrupted, preventing subsequent login from xdm (number keys don't seem to work). Then
I have to force-reboot and wait for fsck. This is a small price to pay for the fun of
E13.
It was hard finding source for E13 on the net with www.enlightenment.org down for the
last few days. I found a mirror somewhere in Europe.
Thanks again!
