You are both incorrect. Exceed is an X server for Windows NT/95. I
run fvwm2 off an AIX and a Solaris box all the time using Exceed, and
there is absolutely no reason why E wouldn't work too, unless it
tries to use something Exceed doesn't implement.
I would recommend using the program xsession. It allows you to choose
your window manager via a pull-down menu. You can find the latest
version, 1.1, at http://www.tcserv.com/archive/xsession-1.1.tar.gz
That way, if E doesn't work for some reason, you don't get rudely
logged out. Also handy should E crash on you.... (As if that has
ever happened....) ;-)
